A true one off item this coffee table is created from Hawkes Bay NZ grown Walnut. In his younger days a farmer planted a number of Black Walnut timber trees along with some eating Walnuts. Before selling and leaving the farm he had the trees harvested, milled into slabs and set aside to dry. Seven years later the slabs were dry and I bought some, when the slabs arrived the trailer included this piece from an eating Walnut tree which had split during the drying process, as soon as I saw it is said coffee table so I selected it along with some more traditional slabs.

In the workshop I did as little as possible to make the timber presentable, I hand cut and fitted 3 Elm Bow ties to stabilize the open split then dressed, lightly oiled and waxed the finished slab. The legs are laser cut 10mm plate steel darkened and sealed with wax applied to the heated steel.
